Question:
Making Dubstep. Where do I start?
2013-07-08 10:36:04 UTC
I have very little previous experience in music software apart from using acid music studio to record guitar on. I like to be creative in making my own music. But what do I need to start? What software do you recommend. I am willing to spend up to 300 euro on software but don't want to go much over that unless I have to. Do I need a midi keyboard to make dubstep? So far i have been looking at Ableton Live and Fruity loops. If I was to get one of these would they include samples and drum beats? I really want to do this but I just need someone to give me a place to start from. Also if there are any extra bits of vital information that a beginner would need when starting off then please share them. Thanks in advance ! :)

FL studios is good it comes with a very wide variety of sounds and instruments, you can also download and add more. The program is also pretty easy to use even for beginners, i would recommend you get a trail version to see if you like it.

Fruity Loops (FL Studio 11) is good. It comes with sounds and samples but you can add more if you like. You can get the Producer Edition which is in your price range. Here is a promo link to get a 10% discount from the official site if you are interested: https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offer=Default&promo=EDAJCI416

A midi keyboard does help and you can use it with the program. Also a mic is good to have if you want to record or add vocals.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I used sonic foundry's Acid for a long time - but if you want to really have fun go to:

www.audiotool.com

Click 'launch app', and get ready to have your mind blown (requires a computer that can run flash, but it's apparently available on the iTunes store now too).

It's like having a studio full of synths, drum machines, tons of fx, AND the ability to incorporate samples (which there are tons of - especially for dubstep).

Get a free account and you can upload your own samples and save tracks - it's like nothing you've ever seen before, and (((totally free))).

I have trouble comprehending that last fact every time I open it.

I use FL Studio Producer Edition. It's not too hard to learn but has advanced features. You can use VST plugins and samples to get any sound you want, it's great for electronic music like dubstep. You can try the free demo at flstudio.com or buy it with 10% discount with the promo link for new users https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offer=Default&promo=BACJBAA468

It does come with some samples and after you buy it you can download more, but more important, there are tons of free VST plugins available that you can use. Many quality ones are available, as good as commercial counterparts. Take a look at the various plugins listed at http://bedroomproducersblog.com/category/bpb-freeware-studio/

You can also get tons of free samples to make your beats, check places like:

Good luck and have fun!
