The 80's variety of styles and some of the bands, Green Day, U2, Metallica, Guns'n'Roses, The Police (even tho they were punk in the late 70"s) The revival of Queen and Bruce Springsteen as well as the beginnings of grunge and alt rock.

If You ask Me I think today's music is worse than 80's music and the music back then was bad. Now a lot of people are using the beats from the 80's in today's music but that is more because they can't be original. If you ask me you can't really say that music from the 80's influenced today's music it is a whole new Genre in itself. Everything is Popular music now. You can listen to one station and hear Ludacris followed by Taylor Swift followed by Nickleback and the list goes on. Music isn't the same at all anymore I don't know why you would think 80's music influenced today's music but hey it's your radio show tell your listeners whatever. By the way my favorite 80's song is "Cool it now" by New Edition

The 80's was simply a mix of great styles from all over the world. It was a mixture that had never been seen or heard before and challenged previous ideas of how music should be sung/written and also displayed.
It was music you could feel in all parts of your body although it has left most of us half deaf. Still, a small price to pay for the nights of pleasure.

okeedokee I'm no music expert ....but i was a teen during the 80's , now , whilst i am not obsessed with 80 s music what i feel sets it apart is melody. it seemed to follow an almost 50's formula of this is the verse and now here is the chorus with a satisfying 'penchant' for crescendos.
my fave song from the 80.s .....'lets dance ' by David bowie or 'come on Eileen' by dexy's.
OMG I feel really guilty not to mention billy mackenzie and the associates.....GOD I LOVED him...............postcard records 'n' all that....I can feel myself going off on a self indulgent rant now so.... back to the Q.
i think the communards epitomise the 80's for me.
HAHA Ive just been trawling the no 1's from the 80's and saw Pete burns 'you spin me round'.....he used to be a sales asst in lpool ( probe) and spent most of his time posing/sulking on the steps....what a twonk.(happy teen memories though!!)

60s and 70s were much better although there were some good tunes created in the 80s and 90s. Since the new millennium began there has been very little original good music written. No wonder so many kids want to drink copious amounts of alcohol and then cause havoc.

The 60's and 70's were even better. Songs like "You'll never walk alone" by Gerry and the Pacemakers (from the 60's) and "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen (from the 70's) embody 'anthems' which will be sung for the next 5000 years. The 80's? Nothing to shout about!

If you listen to any music nowadays, they all have taken sound bites from the 80's.
The kids today think that they are hearing something new and when you tell them it isn't, they want proof.
My favorite song from the 80's was by Cameo: Candy!!
Owwwww....that Larry Blackmon could NOT be duplicated!!!

Electronica took off, style and music took off (New Romantics), and sexual ambiguity was at its finest. Also, there were a lot of good protest songs. My favourite song? I can do you a top 3:
1. Time (Clock of the Heart) - Culture Club
2. Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
3. Take on Me - A-Ha

There was some really cheesy tunes - guilty pleasures now!!!!
Maybe it's an age thing? - those who have a fav tune from the 80's remember growing up during that time... when life was innocent and the most important thing was who you danced with (Careless Whisper lol) at then end of the school disco lol
